Everybody's Book of Self-Defense
Published in Library Binding by Lerner Publications Company (January, 1979)
Author: Fred. Neff
Average review score:

Encyclopedia of How to Defend Yourself
When I came upon Everybody's Self-Defense Book I was amazed at its encyclopedic scope. On the cover of my book it says "a comprehensive manual for beginners," and this is no understatement. This book truly provides a broad discussion of various approaches that can be used for self-defense. I love the way the author, Fred Neff, wrote the book. His text is very easy to read and use to learn how to do moves. The book provides clear photographs that illustrate what is said in the text. After using the book for the last year and half as a learning and practice guide to self-defense, I can say it is a fabulous find. Everybody's Self-Defense Book is so great that over the last few months I have bought Lessons From the Art of Kempo, Lessons From the Japanese Masters, Lessons From the Fighting Commandos, Lessons From the Western Warriors and Lessons From the Eastern Warriors by the same author. Each of these beautifully written books is worth owning. I plan to continue to use Everybody's Self-Defense Book as a training tool and give it a five star rating.

Experiments in Biochemistry: A Hands-On Approach
Published in Paperback by Brooks Cole (06 April, 1999)
Authors: Shawn O. Farrell and Ryan T. Ranallo
Average review score:

Best Introductory Biochemistry lab Manual!
We teach a mixed class, chemistry, biology and pre-med majors. This book covers introductory topics that the chemists find easy but biology majors need to review (statistics, Beer's Law, etc.) Later, it covers molecular biology techniques that biologists are familiar with but chemistry majors are not! it is the best for a mixed class. It is clear and gives enough background that students can read it on their own and come prepared for lab....I have found no mistakes in the text.

Then talks about and shows photos of some costumes so you get a feel for what colors to sew up if you are the ambitious sort.

Farming the Dust Bowl: A First-Hand Account from Kansas
Published in Paperback by Univ Pr of Kansas (March, 1986)
Authors: Lawrence Svobida and R. Douglas Hurt
Average review score:

Unique
Having searched for a first hand account of what it was like to attempt to farm during the dust bowl I was very pleased to find this work. Svobida provides a year by year account of his attempts to do that and I enjoyed learning from his trials and tribulations. The book is unique, as to this point, it is the only work I've found that gives the details of how farmers attempted to prevail during the dust bowl years. Increased an already high admiration for those who lived in and trhough the dust bowl.

Feather's Hand
Published in Paperback by Swan Scythe Press (28 January, 2000)
Author: Susan Kelly-DeWitt
Average review score:

Fresh, unusual poetry
I loved this highly original chapbook, which brilliantly encompasses big themes. What links the poems is art--or rather the arts. Unlike the usual poem based on a work of art, these do not lean on someone else's creation, but spring from life's raw material. Sometimes the author employs a finished composition, a painting by Bellini or O'Keefe, for example, as a springboard for her enigmatic imagination. More often she alludes to the creativity she can bring forth as a teacher from destitute people and prisoners. Earthy yet erudite, vibrant with language that takes the breath away, each poem lifts from the page and enters its reader's life.

Finger Weaving: Indian Braiding,
Published in Hardcover by Sterling Publications (July, 1973)
Author: Alta R. Turner
Average review score:

Recommended for students of Native American handicrafts.
Finger weaving (also called Indian braiding) dates back centuries. All that is needed to weave these intricate, beautiful designs is a short dowel, some vividly colored yearn, and your fingers. Alta Turner draws upon her years of experience as a teacher of finger weaving to introduce the reader to the basic techniques and patterns of the North American Plains and Woodlands Indians, including the diagonal, chevron, double chevron, diamond, double diamond, lightning, double lightning and arrow-head designs. Following these, she demonstrates several striking Peruvian designs (including the Peruvian rep braids and Peruvian cross rep braids). The informative text is enhanced with diagrams and illustrated directions enabling the reader to create woven sashes, belts, collars, neck-ties, headbands, and bands for trimming or lengthening clothes. Finger Weaving: Indian Braiding is an inexpensive but invaluable 48 page booklet that will prove of high interest to students of Native American culture, costumers, and needlecrafters.
